Overview

This certificate builds intercultural communication skills and an understanding of present-day Canadian social and family issues, with particular attention to Indigenous populations, preparing specialized education assistants or community support workers to assist people with a broad range of disabilities. It brings distinct skills and training to the workplace that help integrate Indigenous cultural and curricular content.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants only, priority-admission stream. Admission requires a signed Human Services Requisite Skills and Abilities document and a 300-word Letter of Intent describing the applicant's motivation and career goals, in addition to North Island College's academic entrance standard for Human Services programs. Indigenous applicants may request a reserved priority-admission seat by self-identifying and completing the Indigenous Priority Admission Request form; applicants are otherwise considered on a first-applied, first-qualified basis. Before classes begin, admitted students must attend a mandatory information session, hold a current Standard First Aid certificate with CPR Level C valid through the program, submit a Criminal Record Check, and complete a Personal Immunization form validated by a public health nurse; those placed in high-risk health-authority practicum settings must also complete an additional 8-hour Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum module.

Application Deadline: This is a limited-entry program at NIC: for the 2026/27 cycle the application deadline is the last Monday of August for a September start, the third Friday of December for a January start, or five days before the start date for a mid-term intake; seats go by date of a complete, qualifying application.
