Program details

Overview

Captioning and Court Reporting is a diploma program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology that trains students to transcribe speech at 225 words per minute and higher using an electronic shorthand machine and computer technology, producing a near-simultaneous printed transcript of spoken conversation. It is the only captioning and court reporting program in Western Canada approved by the National Court Reporters Association, a 35,000-member organization based in the United States, and graduates find employment across Canada, the United States and internationally. Entry follows completion of NAIT's Court Transcription certificate and machine shorthand testing. The program's official page notes it is not currently accepting applications, so no active intake term or nominal program length is published at this time; prospective applicants are directed to contact NAIT's Student Service Centre for current status.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry requires successful completion of NAIT's Court Transcription certificate with a minimum GPA of 2.0, successful completion of NAIT's CACR1232 Machine Shorthand Testing 1 with a minimum grade of H, and proof of English Language Proficiency (IELTS Academic 6.0 in each section, TOEFL iBT 4.0 overall with 4.0 in each section, PTE Academic 58, or Duolingo 115 overall with no sub-score under 100, among other listed tests). Applicants must also pass four machine shorthand tests at the 120 wpm level and one test at the 140 wpm level, and are expected to have strong computer literacy and command of English. Applicants currently enrolled in CACR1232 may be offered conditional admission provided they also meet the GPA requirement and the English Language Proficiency requirement is satisfied.
