Overview
NAIT's Court Transcription certificate is a one-year program that teaches students to produce accurate transcripts from pre-recorded court proceedings, using machine shorthand and computer-aided transcription software along with the rules of grammar, punctuation and mechanics applied to the spoken word. Graduates learn to write and transcribe verbatim using a steno machine, a specialized shorthand keyboard, and to record and transcribe examinations, testimony, judicial orders, legal opinions and other formal proceedings, applying legal terminology, regulations, professional standards and ethics to their work. The program is offered in both in-person and online delivery formats. Graduates may work as court transcriptionists, scopists, and proofreaders, producing transcripts and verbatim captions for disciplinary proceedings, arbitration hearings, 9-1-1 calls, interviews, investigations, meetings, and pre-recorded television and internet video.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires 63% in each of Grade 12 Language Arts (English 30-2) and Grade 12 Social Studies or Legal Studies, plus proof of English Language Proficiency.
