Program details

Overview

Software Development is a diploma program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology covering data science, artificial intelligence, traditional software development, full-stack web development, DevOps, and systems administration. The curriculum places emphasis on user-centred design and interface development alongside programming fundamentals. Students complete work experience placements as part of the program. It is delivered on campus at the institute's Edmonton location. The program's official page states that no prior experience with software systems, programming, or data is required to apply, making it suited to students entering the field for the first time as well as those with some existing technical background who want structured, applied training. It is intended to prepare graduates for roles such as software developer, web developer, data analyst, and DevOps engineer. Program length and delivery schedule beyond full-time, on-campus study are not detailed on the official page.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires Grade 11 Language Arts (English 20-2) and Grade 11 Mathematics (Math 20-2 or Applied Math 20), plus NAIT's institution-wide English Language Proficiency requirement, accepting IELTS Academic at 6.0 in each section, TOEFL iBT at 4.0 overall with 4.0 in each section, PTE Academic at 58, or Duolingo at 115 overall with no sub-score under 100, among other listed tests. Applicants missing the Language Arts or Mathematics requirement may substitute NAIT's Academic Upgrading Placement Tests. The program sets no further academic prerequisites for admission, but once enrolled every student must supply their own laptop (BYOD) meeting specifications issued on acceptance, since NAIT provides wireless and virtual-desktop access on and off campus rather than program-owned computers.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: NAIT does not publish fixed closing dates: domestic applications for Fall 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, Winter 2027 entry opens 1 March 2026, and Spring 2027 entry opens 1 June 2026, each staying open at least one month and then continuing until the program and waitlist are full or, where seats remain, until the term begins.
