NAIT's Optical Sciences - Contact Lenses programme is a one-year, independent-study Post-Diploma Certificate for licensed, practising opticians who want to add contact lens dispensing to their scope of practice. Applicants must already hold the NAIT Optical Sciences Eyeglasses Diploma or an assessed equivalent, and be employed with a qualified preceptor -- a practising contact lens practitioner, optometrist or ophthalmologist -- willing to supervise clinical training in the workplace. Study is delivered online with no set class times, and clinical training spans 500 hours across two practicum courses supervised by the workplace preceptor. The curriculum covers contact lens fitting, dispensing and patient care, building on the skills gained in the Eyeglasses diploma. On completion, graduates are licensed to dispense contact lenses, a specialization that adds value for employers and expands career opportunities within the optical industry.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed the NAIT Optical Sciences Eyeglasses Diploma or an assessed equivalent, and submit a complete Contact Lens Application Package showing proof of employment in the field and a qualified preceptor -- a practising contact lens practitioner, optometrist or ophthalmologist -- willing to supervise the practicum. A Letter of Good Standing from the applicant's provincial regulatory body confirming licensed, practising optician status is required, along with proof of English Language Proficiency. Applicants who graduated from the Eyeglasses programme before 2015 must also complete OPSC615 Eye Health & Screening as part of their application.
