Overview
Optical Sciences - Eyeglasses is a two-year diploma program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology delivered mainly online, combining self-paced theory on NAIT's Brightspace eLearning system with a workplace-based practicum supervised by a qualified preceptor, similar to an apprenticeship. Students attend two full-day, in-person labs in Edmonton or Calgary during their first and second year, or at their place of work if they qualify for distance status. The curriculum covers frame and lens selection, taking accurate measurements, placing orders, and verifying and adjusting eyeglasses for patients, along with troubleshooting common concerns. Admission requires proof of employment in the field with a registered optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist willing to act as preceptor. The program runs with September and January intakes and is not open to international applicants. It suits people already working in optical dispensing who want a structured, flexible path to a diploma.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Canadian high school diploma or assessed equivalent, along with an Eyeglasses Year One Application Package showing proof of employment in the field and a qualified preceptor willing to supervise the practicum component; the preceptor must be a registered optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist. Applicants must also meet NAIT's institution-wide English Language Proficiency requirement (IELTS Academic 6.0 in each section, TOEFL iBT 4.0 overall with 4.0 in each section, PTE Academic 58, or Duolingo 115 overall with no sub-score under 100, among other listed tests).
