The Machinist apprenticeship trains students to operate metal-cutting and grinding machines to tolerances smaller than one thousandth of an inch, making and repairing parts from metal, plastic, rubber, fibreglass and advanced alloys. Training combines paid on-the-job work with technical instruction delivered on campus at NAIT in labs designed to recreate real-world working conditions. Coursework covers interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints and charts, computing dimensions and tolerances, measuring and laying out work pieces, setting up, operating and maintaining machine tools including CNC equipment, performing precision machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling and grinding, fitting and assembling parts and subassemblies, and measuring parts for accuracy with micrometers and calipers. On completion, apprentices receive a Journeyperson Certificate and an Advanced Diploma from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), preparing them for work in manufacturing, industrial plants and equipment maintenance, including Alberta's energy and aerospace sectors.
