The Parts Technician apprenticeship trains students to identify, dispense and manage parts inventories for equipment including heavy-duty trucks, farm equipment, recreational vehicles and trade tools. The program has two streams: parts technician and materials technician, the latter focused on materials handling, identification, storage, warehouse operations and transportation and traffic management. Both streams combine paid on-the-job training with technical instruction delivered on campus at NAIT in labs designed to recreate real-world working conditions. Coursework covers part numbers, classifications and compatibility across industries, reading and interpreting technical diagrams, schematics and catalogues, labelling and storage principles, record-keeping and basic data entry and reporting, plus stream-specific skills such as autobody-parts basics or materials identification systems. On completion, apprentices receive a Certificate and a Journeyperson Certificate from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), preparing them for roles spanning automotive, forestry and retail industries.
