Overview
The Motive Power Technician – Automotive Service program is an Ontario College Diploma delivered over four semesters at Northern College's Timmins campus, forming part of the Interprovincial Red Seal Automotive Service Technician program. Students learn to diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension and steering systems, electrical and electronic systems, fuel management, and climate-control systems. The curriculum credits all three levels of in-school apprenticeship training toward the Automotive Service Technician Red Seal trade, removing the need for separate eight-week theory blocks after graduation. A ten-week, 150-hour workplace placement gives students practical shop experience under supervision. Instruction combines classroom theory with hands-on lab work in the college's automotive shop facilities. Graduates are positioned to complete their Red Seal apprenticeship hours and pursue certification as Automotive Service Technicians.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M, or U), or equivalent. International applicants must provide proof of a senior high school diploma or certificate, meet Northern College's English-proficiency standard (IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 58, or Duolingo English Test 105), and hold a co-op work permit for the program's unpaid workplace placement.
