The Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship is a four-year Red Seal trade delivered through Alberta's apprenticeship system, combining on-the-job training with technical training blocks at Northern Lakes College. The full apprenticeship requires a minimum of 1,500 hours of on-the-job training each year alongside 16 weeks of technical training. First Period, offered at Northern Lakes College, covers workplace safety, suspension and wheel systems, hydraulics, brake systems, electrical systems and air brakes; apprentices progress through Second, Third and Fourth Periods elsewhere in the system to complete the trade. Technical training is delivered face-to-face at a Northern Lakes College campus, with student housing available at select locations. On completion of all four periods and required work hours, apprentices can pursue Red Seal endorsement as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or, on the Truck and Transport Mechanic pathway, an equivalent endorsement.
