The Carpenter Apprenticeship is a four-period programme delivered through Alberta's apprenticeship system, combining technical training blocks at Northern Lakes College with on-the-job experience under a sponsoring employer. First Period covers safety, building materials, tools, site preparation, foundations, floor systems and residential estimating. Second Period covers frame structures, wood roofs, interior and exterior finishes, stairs and light commercial estimating. Third Period covers concrete work, commercial formwork, commercial interiors and exteriors, and commercial estimating. Fourth Period covers workplace organization, advanced roof framing, renovations, building design, energy efficiency and industrial estimating. Each period combines classroom instruction with lab and shop work, delivered face-to-face at Northern Lakes College campuses, with student housing available at select locations. Graduates who complete all four periods and their apprenticeship hours earn a Journeyperson Certificate, with the option to pursue Interprovincial Red Seal endorsement or an Achievement in Business Competencies (Blue Seal) Certificate.
