Overview
Art History (Non-Studio) is a four-year Bachelor of Arts program at NSCAD University, based at the Fountain Campus in Halifax. Students study visual culture across fine art, craft, design, moving image, performance, and architecture from historical and contemporary perspectives, drawing on feminist and queer theory, Indigenous methodologies, and curatorial practice. Coursework examines how art intersects with politics, popular culture, economics, and technology, building critical writing and research skills rather than studio production. Liberal arts transfer students from other institutions may enter directly into the program, bypassing the shared Foundation year required of other NSCAD degrees. Graduates pursue careers in curation, arts administration, arts writing and criticism, teaching, media, and related fields, and the degree also prepares students for graduate study in art history or museum studies. The program is delivered on-campus, combining lecture-based courses with seminar discussion and independent research.

Admission Requirements: Admission is based on completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent) with an overall average of 70% or higher, including a minimum grade of 70% in Grade 12 English. Applicants presenting an International Baccalaureate Diploma need a minimum score of 24. Quebec CEGEP applicants must have completed at least one year of study with an overall average of 70% or higher. UK and international GCE applicants need at least two subjects at Advanced 'A' Level and three at Ordinary 'O' Level, with an overall average of 'C'. All applicants must submit a portfolio and sketchbook as part of the application.
