Overview
This graduate program leads to a Master of Information Technology Security over 24 months of full-time or part-time study, delivered in-class at the North Oshawa campus with intakes in January and September. It uses a project method in which students apply core course material to a substantial project during the latter part of the program, often in the workplace, and can access a Hacker Research Lab with network equipment and wireless devices for hands-on security projects. Optional fields include Artificial Intelligence in Security, which combines IT-security knowledge with machine-learning skills, and a Cybersecurity Governance stream focused on managing IT security functions; students who do not choose a field follow the General Stream, whose curriculum covers the domains found in the CISSP exam. Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Master of Information Technology Security need a four-year honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent), with preference given to backgrounds in information technology, engineering, science or a related field, and a minimum overall B standing (GPA 3.0 on a 4.3 scale, or 73 to 76 per cent), including a minimum B average over the last two full-time undergraduate years. Applicants must have completed at least one course in advanced programming (e.g. Java, C, C++, C#) and one in advanced mathematics (e.g. linear algebra, calculus, number theory), plus a course or proven work experience in operating systems (Windows, Unix or Linux); related IT work experience is preferred. Durham College graduates of the GC-ISS graduate certificate may enter directly with a minimum B+ GPA (3.3/4.3) in that program and in a related three-year advanced diploma, two employer and two instructor reference letters, and at least three years of relevant technical work experience. English proficiency follows the graduate school's general scale: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 (for tests written after January 21, 2026), Duolingo 120, or CAEL 70 with no sub-score below 60. Intakes run in January and September.
