Overview
This registered apprenticeship program trains electricians in the installation, maintenance, repair and safe operation of electrical wiring and devices. Delivered in a hybrid format at the Cold Lake campus, it is organized into four technical-training periods that combine classroom instruction with hands-on lab and shop work, covering electrical systems, the Canadian Electrical Code, circuit fundamentals, safety procedures, blueprint reading, and, in later periods, three-phase AC systems, motors and transformers. Apprentices complete these technical-training periods between stretches of employer-sponsored workplace experience, as required for registered apprentices with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. The program suits individuals already working toward an electrician apprenticeship who need the structured in-school training component required alongside their on-the-job hours. Completing all four periods qualifies graduates to sit the provincial journeyman examination and pursue Red Seal certification in the electrical trade, opening pathways to work across Canada.

Admission Requirements: Admission is limited to individuals registered as apprentices with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT); applicants must meet AIT's own entrance requirements and show eligibility for the period of training they are entering. Progression through Periods 2, 3, and 4 requires successful completion of the immediately preceding period. Portage College's programme page does not list academic grade thresholds, an English-language test requirement, a criminal record check, immunization condition, or an interview requirement here, and directs applicants to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (tradesecrets.alberta.ca) for the complete entrance-requirement specification.

Application Deadline:Portage College sets no single institution-wide application deadline for domestic applicants, who apply through ApplyAlberta and are generally admitted on a rolling basis until seats fill or the program starts; individual program pages carry their own dates, e.g. the Business Administration Diploma - Management and Hairstyling Certificate close August 15, 2027 and the Indigenous Arts Diploma closes June 1, 2027, all for programs beginning around August 2027, while the Practical Nurse Diploma and Primary Care Paramedic remain 'open until seats are filled.' International applicants apply directly to Portage College with a $160 fee; deadlines are published per program rather than institution-wide, for example the University Studies Diploma's international deadlines of October 15, 2026 for Winter and February 15, 2027 for Spring, and Primary Care Paramedic does not accept international applicants at all. Portage does not publish a single equal-consideration date for either group. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
