Civil Engineering at Queen's University is a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering program offered by the Department of Civil Engineering within Smith Engineering. Students are admitted through Smith Engineering's common first-year curriculum and are guaranteed placement in Civil Engineering after first year. The curriculum begins with engineering science and mathematics fundamentals before progressing to specialized study in structural, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and environmental engineering, covering solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, material behaviour, soil strength, and water quality. In upper years, students choose technical electives such as infrastructure rehabilitation, steel and concrete design, water and wastewater treatment, geotechnical and geoenvironmental design, and coastal processes. Laboratory and design work is integrated across all years, including testing of full-scale building components, wave studies in the Coastal Engineering Lab, and groundwater and water-treatment work in the Environmental Lab. The program opens with a team-based design challenge and concludes with an industry-focused Capstone design project. A Professional Internship option provides an optional paid work placement. Graduates work on infrastructure including buildings, transportation networks, water systems, and flood protection.
