Overview
The MSc in Astrophysics & Astronomy is offered through the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy, a research-intensive department with faculty working across theoretical, computational, applied, and experimental physics and astronomy. Students complete a minimum of four term-length graduate courses, at least two of which must be from the department, alongside a research project that culminates in a thesis, normally completed within two years of initial registration. Master's students are guaranteed a minimum funding stipend of $31,000 per year for two years, made up of teaching assistantships, internal fellowships and bursaries, and supervisor support, with stipends reaching roughly $38,000 for students who hold external scholarships such as NSERC or OGS awards. An accelerated MSc route is available to Queen's undergraduate students in the department. Graduates conduct original research under the supervision of department faculty and may continue to the department's PhD program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires an honours bachelor's degree in Science, or a bachelor's degree in Applied Science, from a recognized university, with second-class standing; registration in the MASc stream additionally requires an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science. Applicants whose native language is not English must meet an English-language proficiency requirement unless exempted, submitting one of: TOEFL iBT (minimum overall score of 4.5 on a 6-point scale, with minimums in writing, speaking, reading, and listening), IELTS Academic (minimum overall score of 7), PTE Academic (minimum overall score of 65), CAEL CE (minimum overall score of 70), or Cambridge English Assessment (minimum score of 185).
