Overview
The Master of Arts (MA) in Economics at Queen's University is a research-oriented graduate program administered by the Department of Economics, intended to prepare students for further doctoral study or professional work as economists. The program normally requires at least three terms of full-time study and must be completed within two years of initial registration; students entering in the Fall term take at least three half-courses in each of the Fall and Winter terms. The degree can be completed through one of three patterns: Program I, six half-courses plus a Master's Thesis; Program II, the pattern chosen by most students, seven half-courses plus a Master's Essay of 7,500 to 12,500 words; or Program III, eight half-courses with a mathematics requirement. All patterns require core training in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and quantitative methods, along with additional graduate courses in economics. The MA is recognized as preparation for doctoral programs in economics in Canada and internationally.
