Overview

The Social Work Diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic is a two-year program that prepares students for entry-level roles in human and social services. Coursework covers ethical decision-making, reconciliation and Indigenous-informed practice, social policy, and advocacy, with an emphasis on social justice and community-informed approaches. The program can be completed full-time or part-time, delivered online or in person, though all first-year students attend an on-campus orientation week and field placements take place in person regardless of delivery format. Students complete four supervised field placement courses, totalling approximately 700 hours, in settings such as community and social service organizations, human services agencies, and support and advocacy programs. Before placements begin, students must be at least 18 and provide a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers and may transfer into RDP's Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies or external Bachelor of Social Work programs at the University of Calgary or Mount Royal University.
