Overview
The Water Well Driller Apprenticeship at Red Deer Polytechnic is a two-period apprenticeship leading to journeyperson certification in Alberta's water well driller trade. Water well drillers set up and operate mobile rotary, boring, or cable-tool drilling rigs to drill residential, commercial, and industrial water wells, and conduct environmental assessment drilling. Coursework covers groundwater flow, borehole construction, pump installation, and environmental assessment drilling, building on geology and engineering fundamentals. The program shares a common first year with the Earth Loop Technician apprenticeship and is delivered in a blended format, alternating classroom instruction with on-the-job work experience through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training system. On completion, graduates receive a Journeyperson Certificate, granting legal authority to work in the trade, and an Education Credential recognizing completion of the diploma-level apprenticeship program.
