Overview
The Therapeutic Recreation Facilitator for Older Adults certificate prepares students to plan, promote, deliver, and evaluate therapeutic and leisure recreation programs for older adults in settings such as personal care homes, health centres, adult day centres, assisted living, and other community-based programs. The nine-month, full-time program is offered at the Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg with a September intake, and a part-time study option is also available. Training combines classroom instruction with an integrated workplace experience and two field placements, giving students direct practice planning and facilitating recreation programming for older adult clients. Criminal record, provincial child abuse registry, and adult abuse registry checks are required before students complete their practicum. The program leads to a certificate credential.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must submit proof of graduation from or enrolment in Grade 12, including one credit of Grade 12 English (40S), along with a completed Applicant Declaration for Check Documents Form. English language requirements are met by three years of full-time secondary education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR-exempt country where English was the language of instruction, or by an approved assessment score such as a LINC Certificate at CLB 8 in all skills, IELTS Academic with a minimum of 6.5 in each of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing, or CanTEST with a minimum of 4.5 in each skill. Mature applicants aged 19 or older who have been out of high school for at least one year may apply by completing Grade 12 English (40S) and meeting the regular English language requirements. Criminal Record, Provincial Child Abuse Registry, and Adult Abuse Registry checks are required before the practicum.
