Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography – Echocardiography is a 16-month post-graduate diploma that trains registered health professionals to perform echocardiography, using high-frequency sound waves to image and assess the heart for diagnostic purposes. The curriculum combines theoretical instruction with clinical training, with content cross-referenced to the national competency profile set by Sonography Canada, and includes clinical placement terms in Year 1 and Year 2. The work demands a high degree of technical skill, hand-eye coordination, and interpersonal ability, since sonographers work directly with patients while operating specialized imaging equipment. The program runs on a September start at the Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg and is open to Manitoba residents only. It is designed for graduates of an accredited health profession program, such as diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic imaging, or radiation therapy, who want to specialize in cardiac ultrasound and pursue certification and registration with Sonography Canada.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet one of three academic pathways: graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with proof of registration with Sonography Canada; graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Imaging or Radiation Therapy program with proof of professional registration; or graduation from another accredited health profession program with six credit hours of Human Anatomy and Physiology (or equivalent) plus documented relevant work experience. Applicants who completed at least three years of full-time secondary education in Canada, the United States, or an ELR-exempt country with English as the language of instruction meet the English language requirement; other applicants follow this program's specific approved assessment pathway. Applicants must also hold current certification in an appropriate First Aid course (Emergency First Aid is not accepted) and submit a completed Applicant Declaration for Check Documents form. The program is open to Manitoba residents only.
