The Cook apprenticeship is a Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) registered trade, completed over a three-year, earn-while-you-learn term. Apprentices are employed in the trade and sign a contract of apprenticeship with their employer and the SATCC, then develop skills mainly through supervised on-the-job training under a certified journeyperson cook. This workplace training is supplemented by required in-school technical training, delivered by Saskatchewan Polytechnic at its Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Saskatoon campuses, amounting to about 40 days a year. Technical-training blocks combine trade theory, testing and hands-on practice in the classroom and kitchen. On completing all three years of on-the-job and in-school training, apprentices become eligible to write the examination for certification as a journeyperson cook, a nationally recognized Red Seal trade. Start dates for specific technical-training periods, along with entrance-level requirements and examination scheduling, are set by the SATCC rather than published on the program page.

Admission Requirements: Entry is through registration as an apprentice with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), rather than direct application to Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
