Overview
The Contemporary Music and Technology – Composition Diploma is a two-year, four-semester, on-campus programme at Selkirk College's Tenth Street campus in Nelson, BC, that explores a range of styles and compositional techniques while giving students the tools to pursue their own artistic pathway. Students study their principal instrument in the first year, then specialize in composition in the second year, developing practical compositional skills across classical, jazz, folk, rock and pop styles. The programme culminates in a half-hour graduating recital in the fourth semester and includes an academic partnership with Berklee College of Music. Admission is Fall only. Graduates are prepared for careers as composers, arrangers and music professionals, or for further study in composition or related music disciplines.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must complete Grade 12 with a minimum of 60% in English Studies 12, and pass an audition and interview consisting of an instrumental ability assessment on an approved instrument, a basic music theory test equivalent to Royal Conservatory Grade II, and an ear training test covering pitch, triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation and interval recognition.
