Overview
Two-year diploma at Selkirk College focused on instrumental or vocal performance within contemporary genres. Students on the Performance major develop proficiency on a principal instrument (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, voice, saxophone, trumpet, banjo, mandolin, or violin/fiddle) across styles including rock, funk, fusion, and jazz, performing in ensembles and public venues throughout the program. Classes are delivered on campus in Nelson, BC, with a single Fall intake each year. Entry requires completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum 60% in English Studies 12, plus a pass on an audition/interview covering instrumental or vocal assessment, a written music-theory examination equivalent to Royal Conservatory Grade II, and an ear-training test. Graduates complete the two-year, four-semester program with a diploma and a working performance skill set applicable to bands, session work, and further music study. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00, with no grade below 70%, is required to graduate.
