Overview
Two-year Songwriting-major diploma within Selkirk College's Contemporary Music and Technology program, focused on original composition. Students develop individual songwriting style while building foundational knowledge of song form, lyric writing, and arrangement, using professional recording software and equipment to produce recordings of their own material. The program concludes with a graduation showcase of a 30-minute set of original songs. Classes run on campus in Nelson, BC, with a single Fall intake each year. Admission requires completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum 60% in English Studies 12, plus a pass on an audition/interview covering instrumental or vocal ability, written music theory to Royal Conservatory Grade II level, and an ear-training test for pitch, triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation. Across four semesters, students complete coursework in composition, production, and performance alongside other Contemporary Music and Technology majors. Graduation from the diploma requires a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher with no grade below 70%.
