Program details
Overview
The Applied Research and Innovation Internship Training program lets current Selkirk College students and recent graduates gain hands-on applied research experience through Selkirk Innovates, tackling real-world problems for external partners. Intake is continuous and participants can work part-time or full-time, logging 420 hours of time-tracked work delivered on campus, at a partner site, or virtually. Interns are paired with a faculty advisor and an external partner to scope and carry out a project that produces a tangible outcome, such as a report or prototype, and take part in learning seminars and networking events alongside the project work. Assessment combines self-assessment, faculty review and partner feedback, and requirements include meeting attendance, mid-point and final reflections, and a final deliverable. Completing the requirements earns a Certificate of Completion, and stacking three internships qualifies a student for an Advanced Applied Research and Innovation Certificate; some placements are paid, depending on available grant and partner funding.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The programme page states no formal academic prerequisites and no English-language test score (IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent); it is aimed at current Selkirk College students or recent graduates of Selkirk Diploma or Degree programs seeking applied-research experience. Applicants must instead demonstrate the required qualifications the page lists: being a strong, self-motivated independent worker; solid computer skills including Microsoft Office and Teams; written communication skills sufficient to produce reports and presentations; oral communication and presenting skills; and the ability to complete tasks under pressure, prioritise work and meet deadlines. Applicants may be required to submit a resume and a cover letter of up to two pages naming their preferred Selkirk Innovates focus area (rural resilience, GIS and natural management, advanced computing, advanced manufacturing, or ion-source technologies), their relevant skills and experience, and how they meet the required qualifications; the cover letter also serves as a writing sample. A laptop is required, and intake is continuous rather than tied to a single start date.
