Program details
Overview
The Contemporary Music and Technology – General Studies Diploma is a two-year, four-semester, on-campus programme at Selkirk College's Tenth Street campus that offers a flexible path for students pursuing a broader music education rather than a single specialization. The major has no concentrated required courses, allowing space for a wide range of elective courses, and it accommodates students who do not meet the admission requirements for the programme's other specialized majors. Students choose from accepted instruments including guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, voice, saxophone, trumpet, banjo, mandolin, and violin or fiddle. The programme is delivered on campus with a Fall intake only, and students complete a minimum of four ensembles as part of their studies. Graduates are prepared for varied music careers or further study, having built broad musicianship rather than a single compositional or performance focus.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need Grade 12 completion or equivalent with a minimum of 60% in English Studies 12, and must pass an audition and interview on an accepted instrument, a basic music theory test equivalent to Royal Conservatory Grade II covering intervals, key signatures and triads, and an ear training test covering pitch, triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation and interval recognition. Remote auditions are accommodated with audio or video material. Applicants with a strong audition but insufficient theory or ear-training scores may attend an August preparation course, requiring a minimum final grade of 70% to proceed.
