Paralegal is an Ontario College Diploma program that prepares students to write the Law Society of Ontario's licensing examination, required to practise as a paralegal in Ontario. The curriculum, delivered over four semesters across two academic years (16 months for a January start), covers the prosecution and defence of summary conviction offences, small claims court procedure, advocacy before administrative tribunals including the Landlord and Tenant Board, torts and contracts, legal accounting, ethics and professional practice, provincial offences and motor vehicle law, employment law, alternative dispute resolution, and legal research and writing. Following the final semester, students complete an unpaid seven-week (240-hour) field placement in a legal environment. Graduates work in community legal clinics, courts, government ministries, in-house legal departments, and law and paralegal firms, or in independent practice within the paralegal's permitted scope.
