Overview

The Educational Psychology Minor is offered by the Faculty of Education for students who want to understand how people learn, covering theory and research on learning, motivation, and skills development, and may be added to any major. The minor makes theoretical and experimental inquiries into how students learn from instruction, how they develop and express motivation in educational settings, and how they acquire skills in school subjects and for learning generally, then applies these findings to the design of instructional experiences. Required coursework begins with Introduction to Educational Psychology and continues with upper-division Education courses covering topics such as language acquisition and developmental differences, instructional psychology, giftedness, and early childhood education. As with all Simon Fraser University degree programs, students must also satisfy the university's writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements. The minor provides a research-based foundation useful for teaching careers or further study in applied psychology and education.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The minor states no separate admission average or test; it may be added to any major by a student already admitted to Simon Fraser University, subject to individual course prerequisites beginning with Introduction to Educational Psychology.
