Overview

The English and Communication joint major combines the study of literature, rhetoric and writing, and cultural criticism with inquiry into the history, methods and social significance of communication, offered jointly by the Department of English (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) and the School of Communication (Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology). The goal is to graduate students skilled in analysing communication and media, versed in literary and print traditions, and proficient in the creative and rhetorical skills of effective communication. Students may complete the Bachelor of Arts degree through either faculty. The 120-unit program combines the English major's lower- and upper-division literature requirements, including at least 20 upper-division English units, with Communication coursework comprising an introductory communication theory course, at least seven 200-level CMNS courses, and seven upper-division CMNS courses (minimum 28 upper-division units) including two at the 400 level. Students are advised to formally declare the joint major with both departments' undergraduate advisors once lower-division requirements are complete.
