Program details

Overview

SFU Continuing Studies' part-time online certificate prepares writers to turn complex technical material into clear documentation, instructional content and digital communication. Eleven required courses run in sequence, opening with introductory technical communication and technical writing and editing, advancing through specialised topics such as indexing and information design, and closing with a guided practicum project. Courses are self-paced within set deadlines, individual courses can be taken before formally applying, and instructors are practising technical communicators. It suits both career changers entering the field and working communicators seeking to advance.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to this Continuing Studies certificate requires completion of Grade 12 or its equivalent; mature students who do not meet that bar may qualify instead with at least five years of appropriate relevant experience. The program page cites an Advanced level of SFU Continuing Studies' English Language Recommendations rather than a specific test score, so applicants whose first language is not English should confirm current IELTS/TOEFL/PTE benchmarks directly with the Continuing Studies office ([email protected], 778-782-8000) before registering. No portfolio, interview, or minimum grade average is stated beyond the mature-student pathway above.
