Overview
The Communication Post-Baccalaureate Diploma at Simon Fraser University is a postgraduate diploma intended for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree and want to add credentials in communication studies. Candidates complete an approved 30 to 32 units of upper-division or graduate coursework, normally organized as eight four-unit courses numbered 300 or above, selected in consultation with an academic advisor. At least five of these courses, totalling 20 units, must be upper-division courses taken within the School of Communication; the remaining 10 to 12 units can be drawn from related disciplines such as sociology, gerontology, history, English, sustainable community development or women's studies. Students who hold a bachelor's degree in a field other than communication may need to complete introductory courses such as CMNS 110 and/or CMNS 130 before taking 300- and 400-level Communication courses, though an advisor determines on a case-by-case basis whether such prerequisites are required or can be waived. The diploma suits degree-holders from other disciplines who want to formally upgrade their academic credentials in communication studies, whether to support a career change, further graduate study, or professional development.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Communication Post-Baccalaureate Diploma is open to applicants who have already completed a bachelor's degree; the program page does not set a minimum GPA, specific prerequisite grade, or English-language test score for admission. Students entering from a bachelor's degree in an area other than communication are encouraged to complete foundational courses such as CMNS 110 and/or CMNS 130 as part of the diploma. Applicants are advised to consult an undergraduate Communication advisor for a full assessment of admission and course-planning requirements not detailed on the public program page.
