Overview
Learning and Developmental Disabilities is a minor offered by the Faculty of Education that may be added to any Simon Fraser University bachelor's degree, including education degree programs. It examines child development, the needs of gifted learners, and the teaching of children with special needs, combining coursework in educational and developmental psychology with applied study of learning disabilities. Students complete a lower-division prerequisite in either educational or developmental psychology, then take upper-division courses covering learning disabilities theory and an accompanying laboratory course, plus further electives from an approved list. A minimum of 15 upper-division units is required to complete the minor. Course sections are offered on the Burnaby and Surrey campuses, with some sections available online alongside in-person offerings. Requirements
Admission Requirements: The minor has no stated minimum GPA of its own. Before declaring it, students must complete a lower-division prerequisite: either EDUC 220 (Introduction to Educational Psychology) or PSYC 250 (Introduction to Developmental Psychology, which itself requires PSYC 102); LING 220 or PSYC 221 is recommended but not required. Upper-division study then requires EDUC 422 (Learning Disabilities) and its companion course EDUC 424 (Learning Disabilities: Laboratory), plus one of EDUC 315, EDUC 473 or an equivalent, along with at least one further course from a specified list, for a minimum of 15 upper-division units overall.
