Overview

Population and Public Health is one of the subject areas within the Health Sciences major at Simon Fraser University, available under both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts options. Students study issues affecting the health of populations and communities, including chronic and infectious disease, environmental and occupational health, global health, health care systems, mental health and addictions, social and health policy, and social inequities in health. The Bachelor of Science route combines basic science courses in biology, chemistry, molecular biology, and statistics with health-science coursework, including training in epidemiology, pathophysiology, and related methods used to study population-level health. The major requires 120 units in total, including at least 44 upper-division units, of which a minimum of 28 must be in Health Sciences (HSCI). Instruction is delivered in person, and students can begin the program at the Surrey campus. The program is intended for students interested in the causes and patterns of disease and health across populations, health-care systems, and public and social health policy.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Population and Public Health is a subject area within the Health Sciences major rather than a separately admitted program, so entry follows Simon Fraser University's standard undergraduate admission process into the Health Sciences major. Internal SFU students transferring into the major must have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.5. The major requires an overall cumulative grade point average and upper-division CGPA of at least 2.0 to graduate, and at least 60 of the 120 required units, including a minimum of 28 Health Sciences (HSCI) units, must be completed at Simon Fraser University.
