Overview

The Teaching ESL Linguistics Certificate is intended for students seeking an introduction to the theory behind the practice of teaching of English as a second language (TESL). The program emphasizes an understanding of a wide range of concepts from linguistics and applied linguistics. Successful completion of a 30-hour practicum in an adult ESL program is also required. The program constitutes basic preparation for teaching English language skills to adult learners, though does not allow the holder to teach in the K-12 system. The certificate also provides preparation for further studies in applied linguistics and TESL. Those pursuing a long-term career in ESL should plan to take more advanced studies upon completion.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Candidates must submit an application form with a statement of purpose and complete an interview. Students are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible after completing LING 200, LING 220 and an upper division course, preferably in linguistics, with a minimum C- grade. Applications are reviewed against three annual deadlines (September 30, January 31, May 31). Students must demonstrate excellent spoken and written English; this requirement is more stringent than the University's minimum English language requirement. Admission to this program has been suspended effective Summer 2026.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
