Program details

Overview

The MA in Educational Leadership pairs required courses in research approaches, organizational theory, policy processes and leadership studies with fieldwork and an 18-unit thesis, for a minimum of 38 units overall. Students also complete at least 3 units of supervisor-approved electives and, depending on their existing background, a quantitative or qualitative research-methods course. A supervisory committee is expected to be in place before the student's fifth course, and the thesis itself is normally completed and defended within three terms, with the full degree designed to run over nine terms. Admission follows SFU's standard graduate requirements, with allowance for exceptional candidates who demonstrate strong scholarly or professional achievement.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: This program has no additional academic prerequisite of its own: applicants must satisfy the University's general admission standard for a master's degree under Graduate General Regulation 1.3.6a, which asks for a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent from a recognized institution, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or at least 3.33/4.33 (B+) on the final 60 undergraduate units, and references supporting the applicant's readiness for advanced study. In exceptional circumstances, applicants who fall short of these minimums may still be considered where superior scholarly or professional achievement is demonstrated. The program targets current or prospective leaders engaged in educational activities, though no formal work-experience threshold is stated. No programme-specific English-language test score is published; SFU's general graduate policy of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 per section) or TOEFL 90 overall (20 per section) applies to non-native English speakers.
