Program details

Overview

The Linguistics MA offers four distinct completion routes - accelerated, course-based, capstone-based, and thesis-based - letting students match the program's structure to their own research and career plans. Past graduates have gone on to further graduate study at institutions such as Yale, Northwestern, MIT, and the University of Toronto, reflecting the research preparation the program provides.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: MA applicants to Linguistics must have completed the department's core undergraduate sequence: introduction to linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology and semantics. The department defers its GPA floor to Graduate General Regulations 1.3.6a/1.3.7a rather than stating its own figure, so SFU's institution-wide master's threshold of 3.0 on the 4.33 scale (or 3.33 on the final 60 undergraduate units) applies. Linguistics sets its own, higher English-language thresholds for applicants from non-English-speaking countries: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 90 or above with a minimum of 20 in each section (CAEL 70/60, PTE Academic 65/60, Cambridge C1/C2 180, or Duolingo 125/105 also accepted); every accepted test must include a writing component and scores remain valid for two years.

Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May.
