Program details

Overview

This diploma develops the skills and knowledge needed to work with young learners aged three through eight, through study of literature written for children, instructional design, support for learning disabilities, and building positive learning communities. It is designed to deepen understanding of early learning rather than to serve as an early childhood education certificate.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Early Learning Post-Baccalaureate Diploma page does not state a distinct entrance test, minimum average, or GPA threshold for initial admission. Students must first apply for admission (or readmission/reactivation, if they already hold an SFU degree) as a degree holder; their initial status is non-degree-seeking. To be approved and declared into the diploma, students then contact the relevant department advisor, provide a transcript of their first undergraduate degree for a prerequisite assessment, and complete a Program Approval form outlining the specific requirements. Once approved, the diploma itself requires successful completion, within five years, of 30 units of upper-division or graduate work, maintaining a 2.5 grade point average on courses used for the diploma. No language-test scores are stated; because entry requires a completed prior degree, English-language proficiency for admission follows SFU's general scale, e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
