Overview
St. Thomas University's Criminology and Criminal Justice program, part of its Bachelor of Arts, examines crime, its causes, and the people and systems involved in it, with particular attention to the Canadian criminal justice system: corrections, courts, policing, victimology, youth-at-risk, and criminal procedure. Taught in a liberal-arts setting, the program emphasizes critical thinking about the legal system's problems and inequalities, drawing on faculty with backgrounds in criminology, law, psychology, bioethics, and sociology so that crime and policy are examined from multiple angles. Course-based and extracurricular experiential learning connects academic study to practice, including courses with visits to courtrooms, correctional facilities, and law enforcement agencies, along with faculty-supervised research internships that can lead to conference attendance or publication. Through the STU Internship Program, students can also complete placements with local criminal-justice-system agencies and non-governmental organizations. The program is delivered at STU's Fredericton campus. It suits students who question how the criminal justice system works, want a deeper understanding of why people engage in crime, or are motivated by social justice, and prepares graduates for fields such as policing, probation and parole, law, the civil service, border services, and non-governmental or humanitarian work.

Admission Requirements: The Criminology and Criminal Justice concentration publishes no admission requirements of its own; entry runs through St. Thomas's general Bachelor of Arts requirements. Canadian high school applicants need graduation with a minimum 70% average on five successfully completed Grade 12 academic courses, including Grade 12 academic English (or French for Francophone-school applicants) and four Grade 12 academic electives from STU's approved list; meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission. International applicants must show academic strength comparable to Canadian applicants and are encouraged to apply by June 1 for September entry or October 1 for January entry. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL, Duolingo or PTE Academic scores: a full course load requires TOEFL 89 (writing 4.5), IELTS 6.5, MELAB 80, CAEL 60, Duolingo 115 or PTE 62+.
