Overview
St. Thomas University's Bachelor of Social Work is a four-year degree that begins with two years of liberal arts study before students apply, after 60 credit hours, into two further years of professional social work education. The program is grounded in a structural approach to social work, framing problems such as poverty, homelessness, gendered violence, racial discrimination, and climate change as rooted in structural inequalities rather than individual failings, and covers the history, values, ethics, and skills of social work practice, social welfare and policy analysis, anti-oppressive practice, and community organizing. Field practicums, required for accreditation under the Canadian Association for Social Work Education, total a minimum of 700 hours: a first placement of about 250 hours in the winter of third year focused on community and organizational-level social action, and a second of about 450 hours in the winter of fourth year in a clinical setting supported by experienced field instructors. A research methods course rounds out preparation for professional practice. Admission Requirements: Applicants transfer into the Bachelor of Social Work after their second year of STU's Bachelor of Arts, having completed a minimum of 60 credit hours in liberal arts with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or a GPA of 3.0 on the most recent 30 credit hours), including a grade of at least B in SCWK 2013 Introduction to Social Welfare and SCWK 2023 Introduction to Social Work. The application, due January 31, requires a completed application form, a personal statement discussing interest in becoming a social worker, a detailed resume of volunteer and paid employment, a $55 fee ($40 for New Brunswick residents), and two online references, one academic and one from community, volunteer or paid-work experience. The programme page states that applicants whose primary language is not English must submit official proficiency scores but does not publish minimums; St. Thomas's general requirement is TOEFL 89 (writing 4.5), IELTS 6.5, MELAB 80, CAEL 60, Duolingo 115 or PTE 62+ for a full course load.
