This program studies the universe from the scale of galaxies to subatomic particles, combining theoretical coursework with experimental laboratory work and covering topics such as physical computing, quantum computing, and medical imaging. Faculty research areas feeding into the program include digital agriculture, robotics, neutron and neutrino physics, materials science, MRI applications, black holes, and quantum gravity. The Bachelor of Science is available as a three-year or four-year degree, with specialized streams in Pre-Engineering, Honours, Applied Physics, Chemical Physics, Computational Physics, Medical Physics, and Mathematical Physics, plus a standalone Physics minor. Undergraduates have access to research opportunities, including paid positions with faculty research groups. The program suits students drawn to both the theoretical and experimental sides of physics, with the different streams allowing a focus toward engineering transfer, medical physics, computation, or chemistry-adjacent physics; those interested in teaching physics are directed toward the minor option. Cited applications of the field include cancer treatment, joint-injury research, and sustainable energy development.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: In addition to meeting The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements, Physics requires Physics 40S and Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S from Manitoba high school (or the equivalent); some introductory courses, such as Introductory Physics, Astronomy, Cosmology and Scientific Computing, do not require these prerequisites. The programme's own page sets no separate English-language score; applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's institution-wide requirement instead: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 (86 overall/20 per component for tests before January 21, 2026), Duolingo English Test 120, or PTE Academic 58, valid for two years. Waivers are available for three years of full-time English-medium study in Canada, a Canadian Grade 12 English credit of at least 70%, IB Higher Level English (grade 4+), or AP English (grade 3+).
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
