Overview
Statistics: Data Science is a stream within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Winnipeg, combining statistics, mathematics, and applied computer science coursework. Students learn to analyze and interpret large and unstructured datasets, build statistical models, and communicate results to support decision-making. The program is offered as both a four-year Bachelor of Science and a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Statistics (Data Science stream). Coursework includes statistical computing using R, applied and advanced regression analysis, statistical learning methods such as LASSO and ridge regression, survey sampling, time series and forecasting, and multivariate methods. First-year requirements include an introductory statistics course, two introductory calculus courses, linear algebra, and an academic writing requirement. Admission requires The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements plus Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S; students without this prerequisite can complete a Mathematics Access sequence as a substitute. Graduates work as data scientists and data analysts in sectors including biostatistics, health care research, government, agriculture, and actuarial work, and employers such as Statistics Canada regularly recruit from the program.
Requirements
