Program details

Overview

This Master of Public Administration, offered jointly with the University of Manitoba, provides an interdisciplinary, political-science-oriented grounding in the theory and practice of government organizations, with policy content covering health care, public finance, Aboriginal government, and organizational change. The degree requires 36 credit hours of coursework plus two 13-week work terms, and includes a capstone component in which students carry out an individually supervised project connecting theory to practice. Students can study full-time or part-time, with part-time completion taking up to six years, and a Cooperative Education option provides structured, credit-bearing work experience alongside the required work terms. Admission draws from a range of undergraduate backgrounds, including political science, sociology, social work, science, economics, business, and nursing, requiring a four-year degree with a 3.0 GPA over the final 60 credit hours. The program suits students aiming at government careers, and graduates go on to work in government, international law and organizations, teaching, journalism, public relations, management consulting, and non-governmental organizations.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The joint Master of Public Administration is a multi-disciplinary program admitting students from backgrounds including political science, sociology, social work, science, economics, business, and nursing; applicants may be recommended for admission with a four-year undergraduate degree and a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours of that degree (the page does not state the GPA scale). Because this program is delivered jointly with, and applied for through, the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba, English-language-proficiency requirements are set on the University of Manitoba's own graduate admissions page rather than UWinnipeg's; the UWinnipeg programme page does not restate specific test scores. The application deadline is December 15 for enrolment that September.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
