The Master of Public Administration (MPA) at Queen's University's School of Policy Studies is a one-year, full-time, in-person, course-based program preparing students for careers in government and public affairs. Established in 1976, it was one of the first MPA programs in Canada. Students complete twelve courses (36 units) across Fall, Winter, and Summer terms, including six required courses spanning political institutional analysis, economic and quantitative analysis, management, and the policy process, plus at least six elective courses; students may substitute a Master's Research Project or a Directed Reading Course for two electives. The curriculum covers public policy, economics, statistics, and governance, with electives spanning health, immigration, environmental, fiscal, and national security policy. Experiential components include study tours in Ottawa and Toronto and competitive co-op placements. Admission requires a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum upper second-class (B+) standing in the last two years of study. Graduates take up roles across federal, provincial, and municipal government, the private sector, education, health, and the not-for-profit sector.
