Overview

Philosophy at Trent University (Bachelor of Arts, General) develops students' skills in creating, understanding, evaluating, defending, and criticizing arguments. The program serves students drawn to philosophy for its own sake as well as those seeking critical-thinking skills transferable to other disciplines. Coursework provides grounding in the history of philosophy alongside opportunities to explore specific areas of particular philosophical interest, depending on course selection. The department frames philosophical training as both an intrinsically valuable pursuit in its own right and practical preparation for further study or careers that require rigorous analytical reasoning and clear written argument. As a General credential, the program is completed alongside Trent's standard undergraduate degree requirements, allowing students to combine Philosophy courses with electives from other departments across the humanities and social sciences at Trent.
