Overview

Trent University's Certificate in American Sign Language (ASL) gives students an opportunity to develop intermediate-level proficiency in ASL for career advancement or communication in the Deaf community. It may be completed as a stand-alone credential, for which applicants need the equivalent of Ontario Grade 12 or mature-student status and no prior ASL experience, or in conjunction with an Honours or General degree, where students may graduate with the certificate on completing the required 2.5 credits or on completing their degree. Certificate courses can be counted concurrently toward university degree requirements, and all certificate credits may be applied toward the Option in Languages, with the LING credit and 1.0 ASLA credits also counting toward the Option in Linguistics. On completion, a Trent University transcript records all courses taken and grades received, and credits earned are transferable to the General or Honours BA and BSc degrees.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: As a stand-alone credential, the certificate is open to applicants with the equivalent of Ontario Grade 12 or mature-student status; no prior experience in ASL is required.
