Program details
Overview
This program grants a Master of Arts in Thanatology, the study of death, dying, grief, and bereavement, examined through physical, ethical, spiritual, medical, sociological, and psychological perspectives. The curriculum totals 18 courses completed over two years and covers the grieving process, ethical issues surrounding death and dying, cultural, gender, and societal attitudes toward death, and the role of ritual and memorialization. Students develop skills to support individuals and families facing end-of-life, bereavement, and death-related issues in both secular and church settings. An internship is required to complete the degree, and students seeking certification with the Canadian Thanatology Positive Support network must complete an internship of 260 hours. The program suits graduates and professionals working in chaplaincy, counselling, healthcare, social work, or ministry contexts who want specialized training in supporting the bereaved and those confronting mortality.
