Overview
This 90-credit undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in biology, delivered through a problem-based learning format at the Montreal campus over three years of full-time study. Students work in groups of 10 to 12 with faculty tutors, progressing through sequential units lasting one to nine weeks; a typical week includes two three-hour tutorials and one six-hour laboratory session. The first two years cover foundational biology, examining living organisms, biodiversity, and their environmental interactions, while the third year offers specialization in ecology, molecular and cellular biology, or toxicology and environmental health. Students may complete a research internship (stage) in Quebec or elsewhere. The ecology specialization includes a nine-week field component, five weeks of which take place at the Saint-Michel-des-Saints ecological station, with students responsible for related transportation, lodging, and living costs. The program is intended for students who have completed prerequisite coursework in biology, chemistry, and mathematics and are aiming for careers in pharmaceutical, environmental, biotechnology, or related scientific fields.

Admission Requirements: Direct entry is via a DEC in Natural Sciences (200.B0), Arts, Letters and Science (700.A0), or specified technical DECs (biomedical analysis technology, animal health, bioecology, natural environment, laboratory techniques, or environmental health and safety); DECs in nursing (180.A0) or dietetic technology (120.A0) qualify if paired with a college course in differential calculus or statistics; any other DEC qualifies if paired with one course each in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (differential calculus or statistics). Applicants may alternatively qualify with at least one year of biology-related work experience (minimum age 21), with at least five completed university courses (15 credits) and a cumulative average of 2.5/4.3, or with a diploma from outside Quebec after at least 13 years of schooling. Missing Biology, Chemistry or Mathematics courses trigger conditional admission, with Biology and Mathematics due before the first term and Chemistry within 12 months. All candidates must prove French proficiency through the DEC's uniform French exam, the Quebec ministry's written test, or UQAM's own written French test; francophone-university graduates are exempt.
