The PhD in Geography (Doctorat en géographie) at Université du Québec à Montréal trains researchers to understand geographic complexity through integrated human-nature and territory-culture perspectives. Students deepen their knowledge of the physical and human processes shaping territorial relations, develop observation and analysis methods, model the structural effects on inhabited spaces, propose solutions to territorial problems, and develop decision-support tools, with an emphasis on territorial innovation, governance, and integrated resource management. Newly launched in fall 2024, the programme totals 90 credits, completed over a nominal three years full-time (five years part-time). Admission requires a master's degree in geography or a related field, or the equivalent, completed with a cumulative average of at least 3.2 on a 4.3 scale; files averaging 2.8 to 3.2 on the 4.3 scale may be admitted after file review, and exceptional bachelor's degree holders may be considered following an interview. Candidates must demonstrate good knowledge of both French and English, with knowledge of a third language considered an advantage; up to two supplementary courses, or a 15-credit preparatory component, may be required to address gaps in prior knowledge.
