Overview
This 45-credit graduate program leads to a Master of Arts (M.A.) in communication, offered in Montreal with day and evening classes, full-time over two years or part-time over four. Students choose among seven concentrations sharing the same M.A. degree, with the concentration name recorded on the diploma for specialized tracks: general research, cinema and moving images, international and intercultural communication, media studies, social digital media, research-creation in experimental media, and video games and gamification. All concentrations include 9 credits of general foundational courses in theory and research methodology, 12 credits of concentration-specific electives, and 24 credits of research activity. Students complete one of three thesis types -- a research thesis, an intervention or action-research thesis, or a creation thesis -- worth 21 credits, plus a 3-credit project course. An international internship (stage) is possible, and the research-creation concentration includes creation-based placements. Admission generally requires a bachelor's degree in communication or a related field with a cumulative average of at least 3.2 out of 4.3, or equivalent relevant experience. Graduates pursue work in media creation and distribution, research, teaching, organizational communication, journalism, and technology evaluation.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.20 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in communication or a related field with a minimum cumulative average of 3.2/4.3 (international applicants should check the Registrariat's equivalency list), or relevant knowledge, training and professional experience; files averaging 2.7-3.19 may still be reviewed by the admissions sub-committee. Candidates whose bachelor's is outside communication may be admitted conditionally, completing a propaedeutic (three or more courses) or remedial coursework (two or fewer) in communication theory and research methods depending on background. Selection weighs the academic file (50%), recommendation letters (10%) and a mandatory three-to-five-page letter of intent (40%, split between relevance of research interests and quality of written French); candidates may also be interviewed. All students must be able to read English texts, and the International and Intercultural Communication concentration may additionally require a third language, verified by test or interview. Concentrations are capped individually. Admission is fall only.
